“Occupy Chicago” and six other groups are gearing up for their protests as the NATO summit approaches.
“Occupy” hosted a news conference at its headquarters at 500 W. Cermak Thursday morning. The People’s Summit, the Coalition Against G8/NATO War and Poverty Agenda (CANG8), National Nurses United (NNU), Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), Chicago Indymedia, and the Barefoot Summit attended the press conference. The groups will demonstrate on Sunday, May 20th at 2pm. They’ll march from the Petrillo Music Shell to McCormick Place.
99 buses will carry protesters to Chicago to take part in the demonstration.
The organizations argue that NATO policies hurt regular people. The groups say money should be spent on housing, education, and health care instead of the war in Afghanistan.
“The Occupy movement is strong. And we’ll be here to fight NATO along with all of our allies,” said Rachael Perrotta, of “Occupy Chicago.”
