by Bob Ortega – Nov. 30, 2011 The Arizona RepublicA group of about 150-200 protesters were greeted by a strong police presence Wednesday morning at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in northeast Phoenix for the American Legislative Exchange Council meeting Wednesday afternoon.

The protesters for the most part were orderly, but at one point, police used pepper spray to move a group of about half a dozen people who were not clearing an area in front of an entrance.

Phoenix police made about a half-dozen arrests at the protest, Phoenix Sgt. Trent Crump said.

“Unfortunately, a few anarchists have joined the Occupied movement, and crowds tried to push their way through the police line on to the resort property,” Crump said. “OC spray was deployed twice on aggressive groups, which was effective in stopping their actions.”

Phoenix resident Pam Boyd said she was at the conference “because ALEC has bought the state legislature in every state and they are not representing our community, they are representing a constituency that is not elected. I want my representation back.”

Police cars were lined up along Greenway Parkway, and officers were stationed at every entrance of the hotel. Most legislators at the conference did not seem aware of the protests going on outside.
